Grant Application Period to the Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation 17.4. - 17.5.2018

Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation supports high-quality research in clinical medicine and related biomedical and/or health sciences.The Foundation has prepared to award this year for these purposes 160 000 €. The recipients of the grants will be published and the grants paid on the Biomedicum Helsinki Day, in fall 2018.

  • Young scientist's grants are meant for graduate students working towards their doctoral degree. The application has to include the plan for the use of funding. The grant will not be allowed for the costs of the dissertation . The same person can receive Young scientist's grant twice.
    The amount of this grant is either 4 000 € or 6 000 €.
  • Start-up grant, is intended to make it easier to take on a research project without having to commit to a career in research. The grant is aimed at either current or past students of medicine / dentistry. The applicant can for instance be a medical student wishing to continue more in-depth their MD / DD thesis or a working doctor who wishes to tackle a specific issue arising from their professional clinical setting. The grant is 4 000€.
  • You can apply only either young scientist or start-up grant. In case you send application for both grants, only the last one will be considered.
  • The clinical investigator grant (max 50 000 €) is purported to support post-doctoral training abroad of a physician scientist with an M.D., Ph.D. degree who is in residence training or has board certification of a clinical specialty.
  • The Foundation will also award (max 25 000 €) from the Borrelia fund (theme areas: borrelia infections and chronic infectious central nervous system or joint diseases) on the grounds of the applications to young scientist, start-up or clinical investigator. For the fund is no separate applicationform.
  • In 2018 there will not be a separate call for grant applications for the urology funds.
Application Period from April 15 to May 15, 2018

Applications will be submitted electronically. Access to the application form will be closed by the dead-line on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 16:00 hrs.

No other calls for applications will take place in 2018. Only the applications by dead-line will be accepted.

After submitting the electronic application form, the appendices should be added as one pdf-file (maximum size is 16 MB).

1. Grants to young scientists (amount of the grant is either 4.000 or 6.000 €)

  • list of publications (max 10 most considerable publications during last five years)

2. Grants to start-up (amount of the grant is 4.000 €)

3. Grants to clinical investigators (amount of the grant is max 50.000 €)

  • application form
  • research plan (max 5 pages)
  • description of the host group/laboratory for post-doctoral training 
  •  short curriculum vitae (max 1 page)
  • list of publications (max 20 publications)
  • invitation to the host group / laboratory

4. Grants to Borrelia fund

  • grants will be awarded on the grounds of the applications to young scientist, start-up or clinical investigator. For the fund is no separate applicationform

During the review process, the following matters will be considered, among others
  • significance of the proposal with regard to medical and health sciences
  • the relevance of the proposal to the key research fields and strengths of the University of Helsinki and the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa
  • research funding from other sources
  • previous research merits of the applicant
  • current status of the thesis project
Use of grant, method of payment and reporting
  • Grants to young scientists are awarded as personal grants. This grant is given twice to the same person.
  • Start-up grants are awarded to make it easier to take on a research project without having to commit to a career in research
  • Grant(s) to clinical investigators is (are) awarded as a personal grant to support post-doctoral training abroad.
  • Borrelia grants will be awarded on the grounds of the applications to young scientist, start-up or clinical investigator.
  • Names of grantees will be published and grants will be paid in fall 2018 on the Biomedicum Helsinki Day. All applicants will receive decision e-mail from the Board of Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation.
  • The person receiving a grant must give a written report on the use of grant to the Board of Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation within one year after payment.
  • The young scientist grantees have to mention the grant by Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation in the Acknowledgements of the publication.
  • The Foundation will inform The Finnish tax authorities of the grants and their recipient.
